After many hours spent on the web trying to find a cage for my rescued parakeet, it soon became clear that most cage manufacturers are clueless when it comes to designing a cage with the bird in mind--round cages, for example, are not good for birds.
Eventually, I found the Vision cage by Hagen, which is ideal for smaller birds, no larger than a cockatiel. This cage size could easily accommodate two parakeets--no need for overcrowding. Although cages should be wider than tall, the proportions of this Vision cage are an acceptable compromise, and still roomy enough.
Besides the features Hagen describes about this cage, I also like that all the bars are "horizontal," giving my parakeet ample opportunity and good footing to climb the walls to his heart's desire. Of course, there is also enough room for him to fly and flit here and there, which is very good for his wings and heart. The room to fly around is especially important, as I'm still clicker training him to come on my finger, and to trust me. Once this is accomplished, I can let him fly about in the house--making sure it's safe--for example, ceiling fans turned off, no predator pets about, and no open unscreened windows.
Having two people makes the assembly easier; however, I did it myself. Lifting the cage off the base for cleaning isn't a design problem; if you're gentle, your bird(s) will most likely hang out on a perch while you lift the cage off its base from the handles on top. If you're unsteady, you may want someone to help you with this procedure--to protect yourself and your bird. The food and water cups are on the bottom; your bird may need some time to discover this if he's had a food and water cup higher up in the past. You can always buy other food and water cups to hang higher up if necessary.
Perches supplied with the cage are good. I also purchased two small booda compy rope perches (21") and one manzanita wood perch (8") to give the bird's feet good exercise. Wooden dowel perches are okay if you supplement them with other perches of different diameters and textures for variety and good foot health, as I've described above. In addition, I also bought a mini pedicure perch, which is good for keeping nails trim.
The four separate doors are very convenient and well thought out. If you're looking for a cage for your smaller bird friend, I highly recommend the Vision line of cages. My young parakeet is very happy in his new and spacious home.
